Quartz Countertop vs. Quartzite Countertop

2022-08-29 14:12:24

As mentioned in the previous article “The Best Countertop for Kitchen Sinks”, quartz remains the most popular material for kitchen countertops in 2022. However, someone may confuse the quartz countertop and quartzite countertop. Actually, there are many differences between them.

How are quartz countertops and quartzite countertops made separately?
The difference between quartz countertop and quartzite countertop, essentially, is that their raw materials are different. Quartz and quartzite sound very similar to one another, but these are two very different materials.

Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica. Quartz countertops are made of engineered stone, with 90% of quartz. Whereas, quartzite countertops are made of quartzite, an abundant metamorphic natural rock. They resemble, to some extent, marbles. It’s fair to say that quartz countertops are all natural.

About appearance
Compared with quartzite countertops, more man-made process is added to the production of quartz countertops. Therefore, quartz countertops come in a wider range of colors and designs. In contrast, quartzite countertops are less flexible in appearance.

There is delicate veining on the surface of quartzite, making it quite similar to marble and granite. Meanwhile, quartzite countertops are more natural.

About durability
The added process of binding makes quartz countertops more durable than quartzite countertops. The surfaces of quartz countertops are non-porous, and thus resistant to chipping, scratching, and bacteria.

About care and maintenance
Quartzite countertops are hard, but not as hard as quartz countertops. The care and maintenance of the former are usually more complicated. Quartzite countertops need sealing and resealing each time a year. Instead, quartz countertops can repel moisture and bacteria, no need to seal them repeatedly.

About price

In terms of price, quartz countertops are less expensive than quartzite countertops. Quartzite countertops are slightly higher due to the process of transforming mined quartzite into slabs. Quartz countertops have lower production costs.
