The origin of the farmhouse sink

2023-05-31 14:53:34

The origin of the farmhouse sink can be traced back to the late 17th century, when there was no running water and people had to fetch water by hand from nearby sources. The farmhouse sink was designed to hold large amounts of water for washing dishes, food and even small children.

The two original farmhouse-style sinks were the Belfast sink and the London sink, named after the cities where they were used. They had similar shapes but different features. The Belfast sink was deeper and had a Weir overflow, which allowed excess water to drain out. The London sink was shallower and had no overflow, to conserve water in areas where it was scarce. These sinks were made of fireclay, a type of ceramic that could withstand high temperatures.

The farmhouse sink evolved over time and became popular in different countries and regions, such as France, America and Scandinavia. It also came in different materials, such as porcelain, cast iron, stainless steel and copper. Today, the farmhouse sink is a trendy choice for many modern kitchens, as it offers style, comfort and functionality.
