Slow draining is one of the most common questions that arise about kitchen sinks. If your kitchen sinks drain slowly and there is no air admittance valve in your kitchens, you may consider adding one as one of the solutions.
What are air admittance valves?Air admittance valves (AVVs), also known as studor vents, are installed as a part of a plumbing system to allow proper venting to occur.
How does an air admittance valve work?An air admittance valve operates through gravity. It works differently with three states. When at zero pressure, the air admittance valve will be sealed and won’t allow gases to enter. When negative pressure develops, the valve will be open and allow gases to enter the drainage system. When positive pressure develops, the valve will also stay sealed and block gases.
In general, an air admittance valve works with the activation of negative pressure. This allows air to be drawn in when required but prevents unwanted odors from entering.
How to install an air admittance valve? The installation of an air admittance valve can be conducted by ourselves, which saves both time and money. If you want a DIY installation, pay attention to the following points.
1. Before starting the installation of an air admittance valve, you’d better check with your local building inspection offices that govern the use of AAVs.
2. The air admittance valve should be unobstructed from items under the sink and it should always be installed vertically, instead of horizontally.
3. The air admittance valve should be kept at least 6 inches far from the spill line.
4. It is important to choose pipes of proper sizes. The typical size of a vent pipe for the bathroom would be 2 inches. And it is better keep to the same size of pipe for the entire project.
